Mother In Law Banished to Garage!

Fine Homebuilding is looking for good examples of "mother in law" units that they can publish in an upcoming book (click here).  

This reminded me of a project I designed a few years ago at Larson Brenner Architects.  The project was actually for grandpa.  A couple we were working with wanted their single 80 year young grandfather nearby, but Grandpa still wanted to live independently.  The solution was to utilize an attic space that already existed above their detached 3 car garage.  With a little planning we were able to create a plan which accommodated a kitchenette, media / sitting space, bill paying / desk space, bedroom zone, dining and a bathroom.  See photos below.

It turned out to be the perfect space for a single guy, but by the time the project was completed, Grandpa..... well.....he found other accommodations with his new tootsie!  That's alright though because the space is perfect for a college student, a young person starting their career, or even for a long weekend visit from Grandpa AND his new gal-pal!!!

Neutral paint colors bathroom

Neutral colors are difficult to classify. The more you reduce saturation, the more neutral a color becomes. So for our purposes, we'll consider browns, creams and grays as we consider these types of colors.

I love the bathroom when I see the its design at first sight. Especially the color matching in the paniting. I feel that it is a room what appeared in the old fairy tale. If you want to be able to change the feel of a room during the seasons, then use beige and gray, and you can safely mix in more definite colors. Choose a neutral and sophisticated color palette by using colors such as brown and cream in medium values for your paint colors. You can bring color to this neutral backdrop through bath accessories such as plants, towels and decorative items.

No matter what your budget, you can get a tropical look in your master bath by just altering a few items such as your wall color, shower curtain and towels. When decorating a bathroom, some of the things you may consider changing include lighting fixtures, floor coverings, wall color and accessories in addition to your hamper and linen storage cabinet.

Bamboo is a great material to consider in other decorative items for you bathroom as well. Look for items made of bamboo, rattan, or a knockoff tropical wood. Cookie Cutter House Plans

I live in the Twin Cities area of Minneapolis / St.Paul, where we have one of the largest Parade of Home tours in the country.  Every year I look through all of the Parade offerings to see if I can identify any new trends.

A couple of things have struck me;  1) how very similar many of these houses are and 2) this economy can not be a great environment for many home builders.   The question begs to be asked;  if you are by-and-large building the same house as your competition, how is your much sought after customer going to decide which house to purchase?    Right, pretty much on price alone.    This doesn't seem like a good business formula to me.

As an architect  I have worked with a number of builders that understand the benefits of  a creative and well thought out home design.   Builders such as this  are not afraid to separate themselves from the pack.  Now more than ever architects and builders need to examine whether their current business practices are serving them well.  Perhaps this is the time to consider doing something completely different,  because quite honestly the consumer has become much more savvy and selective!  They are going to demand smaller, efficient, better designed, and more economical homes.  Cookie cutter homes, clone homes, and yes even McMansion homes may always have a share of the market, but I believe if we don't as an industry, embrace and adapt to the ever changing building market, we will continue to see one business after another close their doors for good.  Now how sad is that?

Most of the bathrooms have a basket to put in some bathing goods.How to choose a suitable and beautiful basket for your bathroom?Shower baskets can be used for many things, such as holding your soap, shampoos, and conditioners. There are many choices for you, but before you choose the bathroom basket, you need to make a budget.The prices on shower baskets are all different. The baskets are all made differently as well, so prices will vary greatly. It all depends on the style you like and where you shop to get these shower baskets.

The most important factor I find worth considering is how practical the shower basket is as per your personal needs. If you prefer storing all necessary items for a shower in your shower basket then you might need a bigger basket. I prefer to keep all my toiletries in a wicker storage basket in my bathroom and then moving the items I need for that specific day into my shower basket just before I have a shower. To that end I have a smaller basket which is perfect for me as I have quite a small shower.

What kind of shower baskets are there:

Well here are some names that you might know about already. The ginger splash is one of the popular baskets, which enables you to combine other baskets; this means that there is two in one basket. Therefore, you can add more things to your shower baskets. At the local bargain stores you can purchase very cheap baskets, which most times you can find a charming variety.

These baskets are made of chrome and plastic. I like the chrome basket better then the plastic. The chrome baskets are easier to clean. The maintenance for these shower basket isn't hard to maintain.

It is a good idea that having a bath after a day work .All of the pressure and exhaustion have been released at the bathing time. Some people enjoy the bathing time and let the water swash their bodies. Shower in the rain shower is a good feeling.

Progressive bathroom trends are moving away from traditional fixtures and into newer concepts such as this natural rain showerhead by Dornbracht. A cute suction toothbrush holder

I like some trinket to decor my home. Such as the soap holder or towel bar.I happen to find a cute toothbrush which looks very beautiful. It is convenient to install it in your bathroom.

The lovely vintage bathroom has lovely vintage fixtures, which include a toothbrush holder. Which would be great, except today's toothbrushes, with their curved handles, don't fit. When we went looking for a solution, we found Happy Suction Toothbrush Holders.

And we are thrilled to see a solution that protects the head of the brush, doesn't require counter space, and is cute enough that kids will want to put their toothbrushes away. Baby steps on the road to teaching them to pick up after themselves!

If you've got a small bathroom than you know what a premium counter space in there can often be. We have a cup on the side of our sink right now for toothbrushes, but it is not an ideal situation for a couple reasons.

Trend to Smaller House Plans

I ran across this article the other day -  "trend toward smaller homes for thriftier seniors"

The article sites the following housing trends for the 50 and over market:

• New house plans are getting a bit smaller - down to about 2300 sf average
• People are looking for affordability
• Folks are doing a lot of in home entertaining,  so open floor plans and kitchens with island seating are important.  Didn't I see this on a golden girls episode?
• People are seeking smaller house plans that still feel large - quote "more space-efficient design concepts include using less space for hallways, fewer walls to give a more open feel, and more storage under stairways and above kitchen cabinets"  Are you kidding me?  These are cited as revolutionary concepts?
• Seniors are open to smaller lots and higher densities
• Clients are making less expensive choices - eschewing granite counters for other alternatives
• 

Well I say it's a great feeling to be in style again!  These are exactly the kinds of homes we have been designing for years at Larson Brenner Architects, and exactly the kinds of house plans I offer at Simply Elegant Home Designs.

And I have news.  The trends cited are not exclusive to the 50's and over crowd.  These are the kinds of homes that our clients have been seeking for quite some time.  And most of our clients have been 30 and 40 somethings.  They are looking for a smaller yet highly functional and livable floor plan.  A house plan that is smarter and nicer.  Around here we call that "just plain good design".
